Catuai was developed in Brazil in the 1950s and 1960s by the Instituto Agronomico de Campinas (IAC). It is a hybrid cross between Mundo Novo (itself a Typica x Bourbon natural hybrid) and Caturra, combining Mundo Novos vigor and productivity with Caturras compact stature.
Characteristics
Catuai plants are compact and highly productive with strong lateral branches that can support heavy cherry loads. The variety comes in two sub-types: Catuai Vermelho (red cherries) and Catuai Amarelo (yellow cherries). The red variant is more common, but yellow Catuai is prized by some specialty producers for its distinct sweetness.

Catuai produces a well-balanced, crowd-pleasing cup:
