Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best coffee brewing method for beginners?+

The French Press is widely considered the easiest method to start with. It requires no paper filters, has a forgiving brew time, and produces a full-bodied cup. The Aeropress is another great beginner option with more versatility. See our Brewing Guides for step-by-step instructions for both.

What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta coffee?+

Arabica (Coffea arabica) accounts for about 60% of world production and is prized for its complex, sweet, and acidic flavor profile. Robusta (Coffea canephora) is hardier, higher in caffeine (2.2% vs 1.2%), and has a stronger, more bitter taste. Most specialty coffee is Arabica. See our Beans & Varieties section for detailed comparisons.

What does the SCA Flavor Wheel show?+

The SCA Coffee Flavor Wheel organizes 95+ tasting notes into a three-level taxonomy. The inner ring has 9 broad categories (Fruity, Floral, Nutty, etc.), the middle ring has 25 subcategories, and the outer ring has 61 specific flavors. It is the global standard for describing coffee taste. Try our interactive version.

When is coffee harvested?+

Coffee harvest timing varies by country and hemisphere. Northern hemisphere origins (Ethiopia, Central America) typically harvest October to March. Southern hemisphere origins (Brazil, Peru) harvest May to October. Colombia harvests year-round with two crop seasons. See our Harvest Calendar for all 18+ producing countries.

How does coffee origin affect flavor?+

Origin is one of the three main flavor determinants (alongside processing and roasting). Ethiopian coffees are known for floral and berry notes, Kenyan for citrus and blackcurrant, Brazilian for chocolate and nuts, and Indonesian for earthy and spicy character. Altitude, soil, and microclimate all play a role. Explore our Origins section to learn more.
