How to Brew: French Press
Full-immersion brewing that produces a rich, heavy-bodied cup. The metal mesh filter allows oils and fine particles through, creating a distinctively full mouthfeel.
What You Need
Step-by-Step Guide
Boil Water
Heat water to 200F (93C). French press is forgiving on temperature but avoid using boiling water directly.
Grind Coarse
Grind 30g of coffee to a coarse consistency, like breadcrumbs. Too fine and you will get sludge and over-extraction.
Add Coffee
Place the coarse grounds in the bottom of the French press. Give it a gentle shake to level the bed.
Pour and Stir
Pour 500g of hot water over the grounds. Give it one gentle stir to ensure all grounds are wet. Do not over-stir.
Steep for 4 Minutes
Place the lid on (plunger up) and wait exactly 4 minutes. This is the standard steep time for a balanced cup.
Plunge Slowly
Press the plunger down slowly and steadily. If it is too hard to press, your grind is too fine. If too easy, grind coarser.
Serve Immediately
Pour all coffee out of the press immediately. Leaving it in contact with the grounds will make it bitter.
Pro Tips
- -The coarse grind is non-negotiable. Fine grounds slip through the mesh and create sludge.
- -Do not leave brewed coffee in the press. Decant everything into cups or a separate carafe.
- -For a cleaner cup, skim the foam off the top before plunging.
- -Experiment with steep time: 3 minutes for lighter, 5 minutes for stronger.
