Over the past year, CoffeeTrove has indexed 440,449 cafes worldwide. Not aggregated from reviews. Not scraped from listings. Built from the ground up, one data point at a time. This is the largest independent cafe database ever assembled, and the numbers tell a story that surprised even us.
The Independent Majority
The single most striking finding: 92% of the world's coffee shops are independent. Not part of a chain. Not franchised. Owned and operated by individuals who decided, against all economic logic, to open a cafe.
That 92% number is higher than most industry estimates. The reason is simple: most reports sample major cities in North America and Europe, where chains concentrate. When you index globally — including Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa — the independents dominate overwhelmingly.
The Score Gap Nobody Talks About
Here is where it gets interesting. Our Golden Drop scoring system evaluates cafes on a 0-100 scale based on data completeness, presence, and quality signals. The average score for independent cafes is 30.2. For chains, it is 24.3.
A 6-point gap might not sound dramatic. But at scale, it represents a systematic quality difference across hundreds of thousands of locations. Independent cafes are more likely to have unique offerings, distinctive atmosphere, and the kind of operational care that shows up in data signals.
The score distribution itself is revealing. The median cafe scores 25 out of 100. The top 1% scores above 55. No cafe in our database has yet crossed 70 — the threshold we consider truly exceptional. This tells us something about the industry: most cafes are adequate. Very few are remarkable.
What Comes Next
This database is a starting point. Over the coming months, we are adding real-time review data, specialty coffee certifications, and photo verification. The goal is not to rank every cafe — it is to make the independent 92% visible in a world where search results favor the chains with the biggest ad budgets.

A version of this analysis also appeared on DropThe, where we ranked Europe's top coffee cities by density data.
