Why We Score Cafes
CoffeeTrove exists to help you find great coffee. Scores are one tool for doing that — a quick signal that says "this cafe has more going for it than that one." But scores are not the whole picture, and understanding how they work helps you use them better.
What the Golden Drop Measures
The Golden Drop score is a composite metric built from two main components:
1. Data Completeness (Baseline Score)
Every cafe starts with a baseline score based on how much verified information is available:
- Has a website: indicates an established business with an online presence
- Has contact information: phone, email, or both — signals a business that wants to be reachable
- Has posted hours: published operating hours show active management
- Has social media presence: active accounts on Instagram, Facebook, or other platforms
- Has a description: tells us the business cares about how it presents itself
- Has location data: verified coordinates for accurate map placement
Each data point contributes to the baseline score. A cafe with a complete profile scores higher than one with just a name and address. This is not a quality judgment — it measures information availability.
2. Community Signals (When Available)
When CoffeeTrove users rate and review a cafe, those community signals are incorporated:
- Average rating from user reviews
- Number of reviews — more reviews increase confidence in the score
- Heart count — community favorites get a signal boost
Community signals currently affect a small percentage of cafes since the platform is young. As more users contribute reviews, this component will become more influential.
3. Independence Bonus
Independent cafes receive a small scoring bonus over chain locations. This reflects a deliberate editorial choice: we believe independent cafes contribute more to local coffee culture and deserve recognition for the risk and effort of operating without corporate backing.
This bonus is transparent and disclosed. Read more about our editorial standards.
What the Score Does Not Measure
The Golden Drop does not directly measure:
- Coffee quality — we do not cup-test every cafe's espresso. Quality signals come from community reviews
- Atmosphere or vibe — these are subjective and vary by person
- Price — expensive does not mean good, cheap does not mean bad
- Food quality — we are a coffee platform, not a restaurant guide
Score Tiers
Scores map to tiers that appear as badges on cafe profiles:
- Mythic (90-100): Exceptional across every dimension. Reserved for cafes with outstanding community ratings, complete data, and strong reputations
- Legendary (80-89): Excellent cafes with strong community support and comprehensive profiles
- Epic (70-79): Very good cafes with solid data and positive reviews
- Rare (60-69): Good cafes with room to grow — often newer or less-reviewed locations
- Uncommon (50-59): Average data completeness, limited community feedback
- Common (below 50): Minimal data available. Not a quality judgment — just means we do not have enough information yet
